Improve Staff Retention and
Re-Invigorate your Clinic...
Staff retention is currently one of the most pressing concerns in healthcare
cost management. According to a 2 year study study conducted by the American Healthcare
Association, the annual turnover rate for long-term
care in New England is a staggering 47.9 % for
RNs and is just slightly lower at 41.5% for LPNs. Acute care facilities
also suffer from similar turnover rates among their nursing staffs.
Lyle Spencer, Ph.D., identifies that the "real cost" of such
employee turnover is approximately the amount of one full year of pay
for each staff member lost. Mr. Spencer developed Hay McBer's competency
assessment methodology, with Harvard Prof. David McClelland, and methods
for calculating the costs and benefits of human resource programs.
Mr. Spencer has taught at the business schools of the University of Chicago
and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He estimates that if a
hospital or clinic loses as few as three nurses during a one year period,
the cost is approximately $100,000 for that year, and the cost increases
significantly if a manager, critical care or surgical nurse resigns!
Many nurses today feel the loss of the relationship-centered aspect of
nursing which has been one of the by-products of many managed care initiatives.
These nurses are seeking to re-capture the spark of heart-centered, healing
health care that was the reason they went into nursing to begin with!
