Certified Whole Health Educator Janis Davies
Lake Almanor resident and Certified Whole Health Educator Janis Davies has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship to attend CancerGuides 2005 training in Berkeley, California, March 13 - 19. In addition to the scholarship awarded by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC, Janis received a generous $500 grant from Sierra Hospice, a program she has volunteered with since 1989; and, a $200 grant from the local Sierra Cancer Guides program spearheaded by Dr. Thomas Archie of the Lake Almanor Clinic. Janis will join over 100 trainees from across the United States, including physicians, oncologists, nurses and social workers. The 7-day intensive is led by Dr. James Gordon, Director of the Center for Mind-body Medicine and author of the book Comprehensive Cancer Care: Integrating Alternative, Complementary, and Conventional Therapies. The conference is held in collaboration with The National Cancer Institute, The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The CancerGuides course includes information for developing a CancerGuides practice, the biology of cancer, psychoneuroimmunology, using Mind-Body medicine in cancer care, cutting-edge therapies, dealing with cancer diagnosis, recurrence and life decisions, cancer nutrition, and herbal and supplement therapies. Cancer is the number one cause of death among Americans under age 85, according to a recent report on MSNBC.com (January 20). Janis is looking forward to creating a special focus working with cancer patients through the Sierra Cancer Guides program. “It’s so important to have access to evidence-based research when creating an integrative program that is unique for that individual.” CancerGuides has been specifically created to address the concerns of patients who want guidance in developing comprehensive and effective programs of cancer care. Janis was certified in 2004 as a Whole Health Educator through the New England School of Whole Health Education in Boston. Founded in 1977, The New England School of Whole Health Education is the pioneer of Whole Health Education, a model of evidence-based patient health education, delivered in a relationship-centered, supportive learning environment. This approach integrates the most current medical research with the wisdom of spiritual teachings and a natural outlook on healing, centered on integrity and compassion. It combines one-to-one peer counseling with respectful listening, unconditional presence, the big picture of health and current evidence-based medical and integrative health information. “I am extremely grateful for the scholarship and grants to attend this nationally recognized program,” Janis said recently, “I am really looking forward to meeting the health educators, many at the top of their field in integrative cancer care, several published authors, and the wide range of participants from around the country doing this same cutting-edge work.” Janis provides evidence-based, whole health information counseling to anyone who has questions or concerns about their health, in a cooperative relationship with their physician(s) when appropriate. Her new office is located at the “Upstairs” Natural Health and Day Spa on Main Street in Chester.
