As your nursing scope of practice includes patient health education, the NIWH training allows for an additional scope of practice that is built upon your nursing education and credentials. Becoming a certified nurse health educator will provide you the opportunity to receive a National Provider Identification (NPI) number and professional liability insurance as a patient health educator. You can utilize the NPI for private holistic practice as a Health and Wellness Educator, as well as work in a physician-led medical practice as a Patient Health Educator.

The Center for Medicare Services has just made it possible for nurse patient health educators to provide Wellness Assessment intakes, both 1st and 2nd visits, with a generous reimbursement of 171.00 and 117.00 respectively, to make patient health educators an important and valuable part of a primary care practice. For details download the Nurse Patient Educator file provided above.

Established in 1977, NIWH is the pioneer of Whole Health Education ® and Behavioral Engagement ™, the first patient education and health behavior change model developed, researched and utilized in clinical settings.

PLEASE NOTE: NIWH nutrition courses are patient/client education focused, providing epidemiological and evidence-base science on the how and why of nutrition in disease prevention, health recovery, wellness maintenance and for patient/client holistic health education. Our whole foods focused nutrition courses are designed to enhance the professional’s knowledge of the science of nutrition but ARE NOT intended to teach learners how to recommend or prescribe diets or supplements to their patients or clients.

Unless a professional has a licensed scope of practice and credentials, along with professional liability insurance to practice nutrition, there are both legal and ethical constraints related to advising an individual about nutrition. The whole picture of heath® approach invites the client into understanding the cause and effect of the physical, emotional, nutritional, environmental and spiritual components of health so they can make the informed, sustainable lifestyle choices they deem are appropriate with their values and needs.
