Body & Soul

As a print and broadcast journalist for 25 years, it had been my privilege to know, and cover many remarkable people. Dr. Donadio, however, is in a class by herself - so much so that after meeting her at the close of our first season on PBS, I am looking forward to making Dr. Donadio and her life-affirming work the focus of one of the Body & Soul programs in our next season.

What strikes one immediately about Dr. Donadio is her heart-centered, passionate commitment to the health and well-being of all of humanity. Realizing that good health is more easily achieved when the desire for it comes from within, her program of whole health education is careful to respect each individual's right to chose. Her role, and that of her students, is to give patients the information they need to make good choices on their own, using the mind/body connection to overcome decades of negative behavior. Like ripples in a pond, the dedicated effort begun by this one individual is changing the face of how medicine regards those it serves - patient by patient, family by family, provider by provider - as each is gently reminded of the magnificent potential that lies within all of us.

Dr. Donadio's life and work exemplifies that spirit of Norman Cousins, who shared with the world his discoveries about the healing power of laughter and love. I recently served as the commencement speaker to graduates of the New England School of Whole Health Education, and was struck by the energy, enthusiasm and love that filled the room - much of it directed to the school's founder and guiding light. I don't know that I've ever witnessed graduates who gave and received a heartfelt hug along with their diplomas! Dr. Donadio believes in hugs, and rightly so: her warmth, humor and compassion pervade every aspect of her life. In scripted speeches from the podium as well as casual conversations throughout the day, the theme that emerged over and over from graduates and their families was how Dr. Donadio's inspiration, education and example had changes their lives - and through them, ultimately, the lives of countless others.

Ideally, optimal health integrates the ancient wisdom of mind, body spirit with the best of Western technology. It is pioneers like Dr. Donadio who are showing us the way to bring these ideals into practice. She is a role model of respectful caring and compassion for the 21st century.

Sincerely,
Gail Harris
