Track D: Curriculum

Our Enhanced Medical Assisting curriculum is comprised of 18 Modules which provide an outstanding academic and hands-on independent study experience. Textbook, workbook and CD-Rom tutorials are included along with clinical tools and instruments for hands on learning.

Module 1: Orientation Module
This module provides a step-by-step guide to successful self-paced independent study. This comprehensive tutorial answers common questions and provides suggestions on topics such as "Creating your own home-classroom." It also supplies details about the Medical Assisting profession, NESWHE faculty, student services and much more. It is the very first module because it is required reading to insure your success as an independent learner!

Module 2: Health Care Occupations is a written component that provides an overview of the history of medicine as well as health care delivery systems and occupations.

Module 3: Professional Ethics and Legal Responsibility
This module presents the general ethics and legal responsibilities of the health care occupations, focusing on those specific to Medical Assisting. These include the Patients' Bill of Rights, the Medical Assisting profession's Code of Ethics, the scope of practice issues, professional liability, the disclosure of patient information, and the legal purpose and function of medical records, along with acceptable methods of changing them.

Module 4: Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Designed to teach the important communication and interpersonal skills necessary for a career in Medical Assisting, this module includes essentials in listening and observational skills. These include response to verbal and non-verbal cues, written communications, interaction with patients and a variety of other important skills necessary for operating and being part of a medical practice.

Module 5: Anatomy and Physiology Part I
The written component covers systems in detail and includes basic anatomical terminology and directional terms, followed by concepts in basic chemistry, cell and tissue biology. This module provides details of the internal human organs.

Module 6: Anatomy and Physiology Part II
Continuing the format of Module I, these classes present the varied systems in detail. These systems provide supplemental information concerning metabolism, human development and fluid/electrolyte/acid-base dynamics. In addition, clinical applications and a brief overview of pathological conditions are introduced.

Module 7: Lifestyle and Wellness
This module explains how diet, exercise, weight control, sleep and personal behaviors influence health. Other topics include: habit-forming substances and treatment, support groups for patients with addictions, a look at stress management, and information on how to best use time. In addition, an overview of the most common and effective complementary and alternative therapies will be given.

Modules 8-18: These modules present the traditional medical component of our Medical Assisting training. The following written curriculums are presented with CD-ROM tutorials:

  • Laboratory and Diagnostic Procedures
  • Out-Patient Surgical Procedures
  • Safety, Security and Emergency Procedures
  • Medicines and the Medical Assistant
  • Medical Emergencies & Recovery
  • Administrative Medical Assisting Parts I & II
  • Setting Up your Externship
  • Evaluating your Externship

The clinical training aspect of the curriculum is supplemented with our Clinical Skills Training Packet. This includes all the supplies and equipment needed to develop skills in the gathering of vital signs and in clinical lab procedures. Three outstanding CD-ROM tutorials are included to guide you through an interactive learning experience.
